Douglas Community Ecoheat (St Brides)

It's Scotland's first community-owned and managed biomass (wood-fuelled) district heating system. It's a wholly-owned trading subsidiary of Douglas St. Bride's Community Group and it is now providing environmentally sound energy not only to the St. Bride's Centre, but also the local bowling club and church.

The project has been funded jointly by the wonderful people at Community Energy Scotland and South Lanarkshire Council. The boilers were switched on for the first time on 27th January 2011 and we are now officially up and running and providing heat. The first delivery of 10 tonnes of wood pellets arrived and were delivered very cleverly and neatly via a blown system. The plant itself is difficult to miss. Sitting adjacent to the centre, it commands a particular presence. For the community, it stands for sustainability, collaboration and innovation. 

The new biomass heating system has now been running for over a year and the Church the Bowling Green and the Centre are enjoying the benefits of the new system. Douglas St Brides Community Group now has a trading subsidary, Douglas Community Ecoheat that provides the heat on a not for profit basis. The Ecoheat group have directors from all 3 buildings on the it and they run this project.
