Brownrigg Court in Newcastle is a district heating scheme which connects the homes to 11 boiler houses. Gentoo Sunderland chose district heating to reduce energy usage and to help tackle fuel poverty amongst their residents. It found that residents using district heating consumed less energy than those with an individual gas boiler.

The housing association was able to make a cost saving of 22% on the scheme's energy bills and it is so efficient that it has helped the site to save 234,000 tonnes in carbon emissions.
