Industrial and Buildings CHP

Each year DECC publishes the Digest of UK Energy Statistics. Chapter 7 collects data on combined heat and power installations in the UK.

In 2013 there were 2014 CHP schemes with an installed electrical capacity of 6170MWe and a heat capacity of 22,225MWth. 67% of the installations use natural gas, while 10.5% use renewable fuels. 

Four industrial sectors account for about 80 per cent of the CHP electrical capacity – oil refineries (38 per cent), chemicals (27 per cent), paper and publishing and printing (8 per cent) and food, beverages and tobacco (7 per cent).

There were over 1400 buildings using CHP including univerisities (83), hotels (263) and leisure centres (467). 

In 2013 the average efficiency of CHP schemes in the UK was 70%. 

Compared to the fossul fuel basket, combined heat and power saved 14.83 MtCO2 in 2013.

MicroCHP

As of March 2015 there were 643 MicroCHP schemes registered to receive Feed in Tariff payments.
