Dr Philip J. Nicholson is Research & Insights Lead for ADE: Demand, where he leads the organisation’s strategic evidence work on demand-side flexibility, industrial decarbonisation, and the transition to net zero. He brings together policy insight, advanced analysis, and interdisciplinary thinking to frame complex energy challenges and turn them into clear, influential, and decision-ready evidence.
Philip is particularly recognised for his strategic approach to problem solving and his ability to connect research, policy, and digital innovation. He leads the development of analytical tools and dashboards that strengthen ADE’s evidence base, support strategic decision-making, and help shape sector thinking on the future of energy demand.
With a background spanning social science, GIS, sustainable development, and creative practice, Philip brings a distinctive perspective to the energy sector. He is motivated by impact: producing work that not only explains complex issues, but helps move Great Britain closer to net zero.
Before joining ADE in 2023, Philip spent a decade in academic research, including at UCL, where he led projects on smart urban technologies, sustainability, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He holds a PhD in Human Geography from the University of Glasgow.
