Cory - Riverside Heat Network

On the bank of the Thames in South East London lies Cory’s energy from waste (EfW) plant - Riverside 1. This site diverts around 800,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from landfill each year, and repurposes the waste to create partially renewable baseload electricity for the national grid.

As the largest commercial operator on the Thames by weight, Cory tugs and barges contain and transport waste from all across London. Waste is collected from river based transfer stations which are located across the length of the river from Wandsworth to Tower Hamlets.

Developments are underway to use the heat produced in the EfW process to benefit local communities. This will result in a heat network for Thamesmead, capable of providing low-carbon, low-cost heating for up to 21,000 homes.
